Bangor Junior Represents Australia.
Jordan Holmes is now an Olyroo, having recently represented the U23 Australian team against Malaysia and Cambodia in the AFC Championships as goalkeeper.
Jordan played with Bangor FC from 2002 to 2011, starting in the 6K team and then playing A grade for the remainder of his time at the club. His ability to score goals was evident at a young age, and he was quickly placed in the role of striker. In 2010 he was part of the premiership winning U12A team. Jordan’s father Tony spent 3 years on the Bangor FC committee as assistant registrar, and Jordan would come up to Billa Rd Oval and help with set up and pull down. He thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Brumbies, and was a one club man until he started his representative career.
In 2011 Jordan decided to move from scoring goals to saving them. He went to goalkeeping coach Jim Fraser, who was instrumental in helping to start his representative career.
In late 2011 Jordan decided to challenge himself by trialling for the Rockdale City Suns in the NSW Premier League. Despite going head to head with a number of more experienced keepers he was successful in his quest and Rockdale offered him the U15’s goalkeeping position.
2012 was a big year for Jordan, he commenced his U15’s season with Rockdale and was then asked to join the New South Wales Institute of Sports U16’s side. Additionally, he was invited by Tony Franken (Australian Socceroos GK Coach) to spend a week at the AIS under his guidance.
In October of that year he went on a private Soccer tour of England organized by Paul Hubbard. The team played against Stoke, Fulham, AFC Bournemouth, Portsmouth and a couple of other sides. At the end of that tour he was approached by Everton to trial in late November. However, the Holmes family declined that offer as Jordan had made a commitment with the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) to attend the National Institute Challenge in December. NSWIS went on to win the National Challenge with Jordan as their keeper.
After the National Institute Challenge, Jordan was approached by Zeljko Kalac to play with Sydney United. He started with Sydney United in 2013 but only played 6 games before receiving offers from academies back in England. The family decided to go with the League One club, AFC Bournemouth, as they felt the Premier League Clubs would be too brutal on a 15 year old who had only been a goalkeeper for 16 months. He signed with Bournemouth in April 2013 to attend their academy. He subsequently became the youngest player since Neil Moss in the 90’s to receive a professional contract from Bournemouth at the age of 16 years and 9 months.
Jordan’s parents, Tony and Sharon, were told they were mad but that decision turned out to be the best one they could have made for his goalkeeping career. By the time Tony and Sharon flew over with Jordan in June 2013, Bournemouth had won 14 games in a row and were promoted to the Championship. They were only in the Championship for 2 years, winning that competition in 2014, and were then promoted to the EPL for the 2015/16 season.
Jordan is still contracted to Bournemouth and is currently on loan to Scottish Premier League Club, St Mirren.
While he is still in the early stages of his professional career, Jordan already has plenty of highlights to look back on. These include making his EPL debut on the bench against Manchester United at Old Trafford aged 19, taking the field against AC Milan and pulling on the Australian jersey at U19, U20 and U23 level.
During one of Jordan’s trips home to Australia he and his father went up to Billa Rd Oval on a Saturday morning and spoke of how surreal it was watching the Bangor juniors play and thinking that this is where his journey started all those years ago.
